The Rowan, Sorbus aucuparia, was considered to be one of the most potent antidotes to ward off evil in ancient times.
Even today, it is planted near to the home to be on guard, frightening away witches and other dark creatures.
A tree which flourishes wherever it is planted. In spring it has a fine display of creamy flowers followed in late summer by vivid red berries and a show of gold and red foliage.
Ecologically very friendly, it is a favourite tree of our song birds who after gorging the berries, will sing most beautifully.

Chopped down to the verge of extinction, there has been an awakended interest in their conservation and regeneration.
They thrive near river banks and hedgerows. A fast growing deciduous spreading tree.
Dark bark and diamond shaped bronze leaveschange to bright green when mature, yellow in autumn. Male and female bear catkins in March/April.
A beautiful tree with whispering leaves.
Fully hardy, prefers sun and deep fertile, moist well drained soil. Tightly planted rows make a good windbreak.

Evergreen oak with glossy dark green leaves and a lovely smooth grey bark. Thrives on chalk and is excellent in exposed coastal positions. Can be trained to keep small and tidy.
Oaks are the tree most associated with England. Frost hardy, grows best in sun or semi-shade and well-drained soil.

Native to the south-east of England, hornbeam is not widely distributed though it can be grown throughout Britain.
Sharply toothed dark green leaves turn yellow and orange in autumn. Vivid green catkins appear in spring through summer. In late September clusters of winged nuts appear.
An exceptionally hard wood, hornbeam had few tradtional uses other than when its durability proved necessary - such as for cartwheels or the cog mechanisms of windmills and watermills. Many of the ancient hornbeams that remain have been pollarded.
